It's been interesting to notice how some of my fellow clergy, in Chapel, cannot resist (or choose to act) the temptation to look ahead in the pages of the liturgical document in front of us.
At any one moment we are called to engage in the sacred present moment of our worship - to read, to pray, to listen, to sing, to be silent - but there seems often a compulsive urge to see what's coming. This urge may be particularly peculiar to clergy who find it unusual not to be leading worship and also to be using a liturgy that is unfamiliar!
I cannot and should not be unaware of the day that is about to unfold but I so much want to be more present in, more attentive to, the "page" that is before me. And, of course, those whom I meet today would prefer, generally (!), for me to pay them attention and not conside the next "page/person" to whom I will soon be talking!
