This past weekend CHT had the glorious privilege of welcoming 'The Dancing Marys' - a stunning work of art (well, really works of art) created by Philadelphia artist Janet Cooke.
Fr. Roberto Caracctololo da Lecce (15/16th century) writes of five "possible spiritual and mental conditions as Mary responds to Gabriel's announcement" - Disquiet, Reflection, Inquiry, Submission, Merit.
Some time back Janet started to collect postcards which showed representations of the Annunication (Gabriel announcing that Mary would be soon pregnant); soon the idea came to Janet to reproduce these classical and contemporary paintings. The result - 96 separate panels brought together in one astounding work - 'The Dancing Marys'.

It was a blessing to watch each panel being installed on Friday, to watch people come view the piece and talk with Janet. And, during second service on Sunday, I felt rather sad that 'The Dancing Marys' would soon be dismantled.
Without challenging the historicity of the Annunication, there is truly some mythic in the story... in weakness confronted by strength, in timidity confronted by hope. Oh surely it is our prayer as it was the prayer of Mary, "Lord, be it to me according to your word"!!!
